The January Mixed Foil League

Meyrick Simmonds increased his lead to 9 points when he won the January Mixed Foil League after four of the seven competitions were completed. His overall score now stands at 399. Second placed Kees Zandvliet on 390 has overtaken 3rd placed Martin Corbet on 387 points.

Clair Le Poidevin is the leading woman on 385 and in fourth place overall. The second woman is Julie Dyer on 365 & still third by a whisker is Carol Wood who shares the score of 325 with Hollie Redhead but has scored a higher total in a competition, the device used to sort out equal scored fencers.

The January competition was sparsely attended with only 26 fencers competing. In division one Meyrick Simmonds made no mistake with five straight victories & an impressive 25-6 points score. Michael Beausire was placed second for the second successive month and is certainly the youngster to watch. Ross Martel was third with two victories just pipping Kees Zandvliet into 4th place when the hits were counted. Clair Le Poidevin & Michael Wright were placed 5th & 6th and are relegated.

Jonathan Brehaut was top dog in the second division and won all his fights though second placed Rupert Sewards took him to 5-4 in a close bout. They are both promoted to the top division next month. Jonathan has had previous experience of division 1 fencing but it will be Ruperts first foray next month. Daniel Nield and Adam Bonner will stay in the division with 3 & 2 victories respectively, whilst Julie Dyer & Mark Childs suffer relegation.

Division 3 was the closest division of the night with no fewer than 4 fencers all with four wins. When the hits were counted to separate them Hollie Redhead came 5 hits ahead of the field with a +10 hits count. Second placed on +5 was Owen Morgan & he & Hollie will fence in division 2 next month. Mita Rahman on +2 came third and Chris Collier on a hits difference of 0 came 4th. Adam Crittell was 5th and stays in the division with Carol Wood and Linda Jones suffering relegation.

The last division saw some excellent fencing with Sue Martel & Marcel de Garis both gaining 5 victories. Sue came first with a superior hits difference & both she & Marcel will be promoted next month. Wendy Batiste & Gail Childs were locked on 4 wins each finishing in that order. Chris Mahy, Cathy Belcher & Jennie Harding finished in that order.
